Selecting the Right Electrical Setup for Your Dock

Because using 120V and 240V electrical equipment near water carries greater risks, we begin every customer consultation with safety. We then design the installation to meet your operating requirements and power demands.

Marine Safety & Electrical Code Compliance

Residential dock electrical systems in Southwest Florida face unique risks from water, corrosion, and outdoor exposure. Whether on freshwater, brackish, or saltwater waterways, equipment must meet applicable electrical codes, marine standards, and local permitting requirements. Proper ground-fault protection, bonding, corrosion-resistant materials, watertight connections, and marine-rated equipment help prevent equipment damage and electric shock drowning. Professional installation, routine inspections, and prompt repairs are essential to protect swimmers, boaters, and waterfront property owners.

What are the applicable codes to be met for power at my dock?

The National Electrical Code (NEC), particularly Article 555, governs wiring for docks and marinas, including pedestals and shore-power receptacles. To reduce electric shock drowning (ESD) risks, it requires 30-milliamp ground-fault protection for feeders and branch circuits serving these facilities. This threshold is more sensitive than typical equipment protection but less sensitive than residential personal protection, such as what you find in your kitchen or bathroom in the home.

The code also requires metal dock structures, railings, and equipment to be bonded to the grounding system, along with marine-grade tinned copper wiring and weather-resistant enclosures. It establishes minimum equipment heights above the water, with stricter requirements below that level.

Are there any dock power codes or regulation specific to Southwest Florida?

Southwest Florida does not impose stricter regional electrical requirements. However, new dock electrical systems, feeder runs, and boat lift wiring require permits and inspections from the applicable city or county building department—such as Collier County, Naples, or Lee County—to verify compliance with the Florida Building Code.

If included, fuel-dispensing docks must also comply with NEC Article 514 hazardous-location rules in addition to Article 555. The fuel area must be classified accordingly, and electrical equipment within it must meet the applicable explosion-proof or intrinsically safe standards.

Installing and Upgrading Dock Power Sytems

Residential boat docks serve many purposes, from providing a convenient place to store and maintain boats to creating an inviting space for relaxing and entertaining family and friends. While a basic dock may require little more than a secure place to moor a small watercraft, many homeowners choose to enhance their dock with electrical power to support additional features and conveniences. Electrical service can provide power for boat lifts, lighting, outlets, appliances, entertainment systems, and onboard boat equipment while vessels are docked. The following are the most common residential dock electrical services we are asked to install

Selecting and installing shore power pedestals.

A shore power pedestal provides a safe, convenient way to power your boat while docked. We begin by assessing your vessel’s current and future electrical needs and the capacity of any existing service. We recommend marine-rated pedestals which include properly sized receptacles, circuit protection, disconnects, and ground-fault protection for reliable, code-compliant operation. Whether you need basic power for charging and maintenance or higher capacity for air conditioning, appliances, and electronics, we can design a solution for your dock and boating needs.

Most commonly we recommend and install pedestals for 30 amp service, up to 50 amps.

Selecting and installing dock lighting systems.

Well-designed dock lighting adds both beauty and functionality to your waterfront property. From illuminating walkways, steps, and seating areas for evening enjoyment to improving visibility and safety around the dock, a professionally installed lighting system can extend the time you spend on the water after sunset. Strategic lighting also enhances security by deterring trespassers, helping prevent accidents, and making it easier to monitor your dock and boat at night. Koska Electric can design and install a dock lighting system that balances aesthetics, performance, and long-term reliability in a marine environment.

Common lighting needs include the following:

  • Underwater LED lights for fish viewing and navigation
  • Surface‑mounted LED fixtures and piling cap lights for walkway illumination
  • Motion‑activated security lighting for security
Designing and installing boat lift systems.

A properly designed boat lift makes it easier to store, protect, and access your vessel while improving safety around the dock. The design process takes into account factors such as the size and weight of the boat, the number of boats to be accommodated, water depth and conditions, dock configuration, and future boating needs. Once the appropriate lift system is selected, we install the electrical service, controls, and power equipment needed for reliable operation. A professionally installed boat lift helps protect your investment from prolonged water exposure while providing a safer and more convenient docking experience.

Upgrading an existing dock power system.

Whether you own a waterfront home or are considering one with a powered dock, a comprehensive electrical inspection helps protect your family, guests, and investment. UV exposure, saltwater corrosion, moisture, and storm surges can quickly damage wiring, seals, and junction boxes, while older systems may lack current NEC safeguards such as bonding, emergency disconnects, and equipment ground-fault protection. A certified inspection identifies hidden fire and current-leakage hazards and helps ensure reliable operation of boat lifts, lighting, and shore power pedestals.
